Photo: Ed Johnson, KP News If you’ve crossed the Purdy Spit in recent weeks, you’ve likely noticed a small forest of tripods with spotting scopes and cameras on the beach. The spit is one of four places in the state where bird watchers have spotted a rare common eider sea duck. Common eiders are the largest North American duck species. The drake’s head is white with a black cap and a greenish nape. It has a white breast, black flanks and a black tail.
