Staff Report

A home in the 7600 block of 174th Avenue near Jackson Lake was destroyed by fire Nov. 25. The call came in at 11:44 a.m.

The owners were home at the time of the fire, but no human casualties were reported. The owners had cats and a dog. Two cats perished in the fire.

The fire started in the back room, an addition to the singlewide mobile home, and spread under the trailer, said Tom Lique, FD 16 fire chief. The skirting had to be removed in order to gain access to the fire under the trailer, creating a challenge for firefighters to access and extinguish the fire.

Though the fire was extinguished, Lique said it was a total loss of property and contents, and estimated the amount to be $225,000.

Firefighters on the scene totaled 18, Lique said. Seven units responded, including 5 career members on shift, 4 day personnel, three volunteers and three off duty personnel, with the remaining personnel there as support to run rehab for the firefighters, and two chief cars for command.

While these crews were at the fire, a medical call came in, Lique said.

“We relied on Gig Harbor and Mason County medical aid units to respond, because all of our crews were still deep in the process of dealing with the fire.”

The firefighters were on the scene until 4:50 p.m., he said.
