Last fall’s Fire District 16 levy couldn’t come soon enough for the firefighters eager to get rid of the district’s two old trucks that had a habit of spending long hours in the repair shop and even breaking down en route to calls. But now that the district is getting new rigs, the two old trucks will get new life in Guatemala, a country that until a few years ago used pickups for ambulances and doors for stretchers

The isolated nature of Herron Island makes fire fighting and responding to medical emergencies tough, especially in low tides when the ferry ride itself takes 30 minutes. Thanks to Fire District 16’s volunteer training program, the local volunteer firefighters and paramedics fill in the gaps.
